Want to get rid of something dirty quickly? Many people either dump items in the garbage or flush them down the toilet. However, flushing any odd items down the toilet could cause it to clog. While the clogging may not occur immediately, it will occur one day as long as you continue to flush these odd items down the toilet.
Dealing with a clogged toilet is something you want to avoid at all costs. The following are items that people commonly flush down toilets that will cause clogging.
- Flushable wipes
Although these wipes are marketed as being flushable, they can still cause your toilet to clog. Flushable wipes do break down in the septic system. However, when compared to regular toilet paper, they take a longer time to do so. Regular toilet paper is safe for use in toilets because it breaks down rapidly. Flushable wipes can clog pipes if used frequently as they will take longer to break down.
- Baby wipes
Regular baby wipes aren’t designed for flushing. In fact, many of them feature fiber that is woven so tight that it doesn’t tear easily. You should dump your soiled baby wipes in a wastebasket for disposal to avoid clogging your toilet.
- Dental floss
If you’re in the habit of dropping that used piece of dental floss in the toilet, stop it right now. Dental floss isn’t designed for disposal by flushing down the toilet. If you continue to flush dental floss down the toilet, it will accumulate and form a net. This net will catch other debris in the plumbing and result in clogging.
- Paper towels and tissue
Many people think that tissue and paper towels are the same as toilet paper. They therefore flush them down the toilet without thinking twice. The truth is that these products, though similar to toilet paper in many ways, have significant differences. Paper towels and tissue are designed to be tougher than regular toilet paper. They therefore do not break down as quickly as toilet paper does. Flushing these items down the toilet will result in clogging.
- Hair
What do you do with the hair you shed while combing it out or taking a shower? Many people shove it in the toilet and flush it down. If this is you, stop it right away. Hair isn’t water soluble. It also does not break down. Hair can last for years in a plumbing system. If you continue to flush your hair down the toilet, it will accumulate and clog your toilet.
- Cooking grease
Many of us are guilty of dumping cooking grease down the toilet in an effort to avoid clogging our kitchen drains. However, the cooking grease will have the same effect on the toilet and its plumbing too. Cooking grease will solidify when it cools. It will collect and can clog your toilet’s plumbing if you continue dumping grease down the toilet.
If you’re flushing any of the above items down the toilet, you should stop doing so right away. You will otherwise have to deal with a clogged toilet sooner or later.
